About Me

I'm a Software Engineer by trade but like to consider myself an all around geek.  This blog is a place where you'll find my thoughts on a number of different things I'm passionate about.  More often than not though that list tends to include: Technology, Social Media and the Web in general, Geek Culture (TV/Movies/SciFi), Space Exploration, Music/A Cappella.

(Any opinions, etc. expressed here are purely my own.)

The Stanford Harmonics - AMAZING A Cappella!

The Sound of Silence:

Ever since I attended my first MIT Logs concert a few years back I've always been a huge fan of collegiate A Cappella. While I've never been much of a singer myself but I have always enjoyed covers and I think for me that's here part of my fandom for this form of music comes from, each arrangement is essentially a cover often of some of my favorite songs. Another big part of it is watching these groups perform and, as a lay person, marveling at how they're able to produce such incredible sound without any help from physical instruments. What's unique about most collegiate A Cappella is that they will typically perform rock or pop songs often arranged by the groups themselves. Lately as a result of the show Glee the A Cappella playlist on my iPhone has been in heavy rotation.

While I've listened to lots of compilations, individual group albums, attended concerts and even some of the ICCA competitions while in California and seen some of the best groups in the country perform there, nothing has captured me like one particular track from this year's compilation BOCA 2009 (Best of Collegiate A Cappella) (iTunes).

That track? The Sound of Silence - by The Stanford Harmonics, when I first listened to it on BOCA 2009 I was actually on the way to work and pulled over just to enjoy it. If that arrangement didn't win serious awards well I don't even know. What prompted me to write this post however is that this morning I decided to check out their web site, as most groups typically post YouTube clips of their performances, um...yeah...WOW!! These guys take the concert aspect to new heights I struggle to even come up with adjectives for it so I'm just going to embed a clip or two below and if you aren't equally blown away well then I will once again be astounded. I'll be ordering their latest album STAT!

Rammstein's "Spiel Mit Mir." - "They can't possibly mean Rammstein can they?" I thought when looking at the title of the clip...yes...yes they can...HOLY-EE-CRAP.

The Harmonics actually just recorded a track of Spiel Mit Mir. It's going to be released as a bonus track on Casa's Sing 6 digital version.
