About Me

I'm a Software Engineer by trade but like to consider myself an all around geek.  This blog is a place where you'll find my thoughts on a number of different things I'm passionate about.  More often than not though that list tends to include: Technology, Social Media and the Web in general, Geek Culture (TV/Movies/SciFi), Space Exploration, Music/A Cappella.

(Any opinions, etc. expressed here are purely my own.)

A Geek Christmas Memory

Once upon a time around 1990 or so we had a particuarly geeky Christmas tradition at our house.  See there used to be a computer game development company known as Sierra-Online you might have heard of some of their work like Kings Quest, Space Quest, Police Quest.  Their primary focus was on classic adventure games which were very story driven. Some might even call their work interactive fiction.

In their hey day Sierra would typically publish an interactive Christmas/Holiday card.  Usally it would be some kind of Christmas scene or funny video that would play developed within their game engine.  Some of them were quite cute and well done, as in the case of the video above.  I'm not sure what got me thinking of it this Christmas but I guess I've been thinking of all the ways that geekness has found its way into my Christmases over the years.

Whether it be interactive Christmas cards (like the one above), or listening to the Soundblaster's text-to-speech do its best rendition of "Twas' the night before Christmas", or watching Hak5's Christmas episode last night on Christmas Eve, it seems there's always been a little geek in Christmas, as it of course should be.
