About Me

I'm a Software Engineer by trade but like to consider myself an all around geek.  This blog is a place where you'll find my thoughts on a number of different things I'm passionate about.  More often than not though that list tends to include: Technology, Social Media and the Web in general, Geek Culture (TV/Movies/SciFi), Space Exploration, Music/A Cappella.

(Any opinions, etc. expressed here are purely my own.)

My Virtual trip to Comic Con 2010

With Comic Con in its final hours I thought I'd throw out what's caught my eye from Comic Con 2010. Once again I didn't go in person (really need to fix that!) but was following as much as I could of the various Blogs, Twitter streams, and I have to say G4 did a good job with their live show as usual.

I recently described Comic Con to a friend as "everything I love about being a geek." Keeping up with everything going on there even with the help of the Twitter was a challenge but overall I was really happy with what came out this year so here's what caught my eye.  Some will probably notice the lack of the big comic book movies like Green Lantern, Green Hornet, Avengers, etc.  Now I know I might loose some geek cred here but I've never been a comic book fan *cringe* yeah I know. However that isn't to say I won't go see and love a lot of those movies (for example Iron Man one of my favorite movies for sure).

Without further aduei here's what did catch my eye...(Also note, the list is in no particular order)...

- Megamind - Tina Fey, Will Ferrell. Wait you need more? Brad Pitt. Okay this is a Dreamworks production 3D animated film with a sort of loosely superman-esque based story with a twist, from the way the typical super hero story plays out.

- Tron: Legacy - Really if I have to explain this one to you why are you even wasting your time with anything else I have to say? :P  Like I said when I tweeted about it stop what you are doing right now and go watch the trailer in HD (come back though!).  I mean it is shot in true 3D not converted, the action scenes in the trailer look completely unhinged, oh and did I mention that craziness of Jeff Bridges playing opposite a younger digital version of himself?  Tron is all about the video game culture it revolves around an arcade and an arcade game which you might be shocked to learn is my thing so I enjoyed the first movie (which I watched after learning about this one last Comic Con) and I'm all in. It's going to be huge, not a tough prediction to make.

- New Haunted Mansion - It's been a while for me but Disney's "Haunted Mansion" was always a staple ride for me when I would go to Disney World. Reaction has been mixed to the news that Guillermo Del Toro was leading a project to remake the attraction. At the absolute minimum I'm intrigued.

- Scott Pilgrim v. The World - I wasn't familiar with this movie until I saw the crazy buzz its panel was getting on Twitter.  It stars Michael Cerra and is adapted from a comic book series. In true Cerra form he is vying for the affection of a girl with a twist that he has to battle his way through an army of her EXes. I also gather that it has lots of references in those battles to various action/scifi movie fight sequences. Let's face it Cerra is Cerra so there's that but I'm at least taking a look at anything that generates this much buzz among geek fandom.

- Hawaii 5-0 - So apparently there is a remake of the Hawaii 5-0 series in the works. Yeah exactly, this one wasn't on my radar either and then same deal massive massive buzz on Twitter. Why all the buzz? Well it stars both Lost alum and Battlestar Galactica Alum in the form of Grace Park aka one Shannon Valerii Agathon.  This one invokes my BSG alum rule, basically I'll at least check out any project that involves a former BSG alum that I hear about.

- Red - Red is a SyFy movie starting Felicia Day. I can't lie the trailer didn't exactly bolster me with a ton of confidence about this being anything really spectacular. What is spectacular though is The Guild. The Guild is a web-series that Felicia Day created and writes. Now it isn't fourth season Wil Wheaton has joined the cast with delightfully hilarious results. Saying Season 4 is the best yet of the guild wouldn't be to much of a stretch. New Episodes appear every Tuesday at www.watchtheguild.com I've been fan since Season 1, a fan of most things Felicia does, and highly recommend it.

- Marvel Anime - I don't remember from where but I feel like I have seen leaked footage of the Marvel Anime project and was definitely intrigued. It was announced that several Marvel properties will appear in anime form on G4 in 2011. If the trailer for Iron Man is anything to go by it is likely that Marvel Anime will garner a place along side Cowboy Bebop as the only other anime that I'd watch.

- Captain America Movie - I must again admit in shame that I don't have any real familiarity with the Captain America franchise. However from the interviews I gather that the origin story of Captain America involves World War II and the Nazis sounds interesting. Also one of the main villians will aparently be played by Hugo Weaving aka Agent Smith from The Matrix, etc. Sounds like good times to me.

- The Event (NBC) - I don't know exactly why but there's something about this new show coming to NBC that has me intrigued. Seems like some political drama, it's been said some scifi elements, and the mystery of what exactly 'the event' actually is.  I also feel like I read somewhere that whatever it seems like it is, it isn't...uh...oookay. Also it looks like NBC has it setup so that Chuck leads into this one and so I'll at least give it a few episodes to prove it is better than Flash Forward was.

- Chuck (NBC) - My full on obsession with the show Chuck on NBC has been well documented here and across Twitter. Well Season 4 has started filming and will begin airing in September. After the way last season ended and wrapped up nicely but also intriguingly (it's one of the many things they do so well) I couldn't be happier that there will be a Season 4 of my favorite scripted TV show on television since it started airing. I'm normally not one for spoilers but the casting of Linda Hamilton (aka Sarah Connor from the Terminator movies) is I think, well pretty bad ass. Other than that just bring more of where Season 3 left off and I think Chuck will really hit its stride in Season 4. Pleeeeeeeeeeease if you haven't check it out!

- The Cape (NBC) - I saw the preview The Cape on G4's coverage of comic con and there was something about it. It's a unique premise it's kind of a Batman-esque hero I guess, not full on power's like Superman, but a crusader who uses unique abilities. Now I watch the preview on NBC's site and see that apparently Summer Glau is involved...YUP I'm in.

- Cowboys and Aliens - Alternate history, comic book adaptation, cowboys, aliens and oh yeah and some guys named Harrison Ford, Daniel Craig, Jon Favreau...UM...YUH. From what I gather as well the asthetic of the movie sounds pretty cool as well, the alien side of things will have a sort of retro alien roswell-esque 50s era look and feel to it, sounds pretty cool to me.

- Dollhouse Comic - I know I said I wasn't into comics but there are times when I feel like that needs to change. It seems that the Whedonverse has a habit of living on in the form of comics. I know there are several Firefly comics at this point and while I've never consumed them the idea of new stories is intriguing.  Dollhouse is now set to get comic as well and it takes place during the 10-year gap we see in the finale of the series. It follows the characters we see in the Epitaph shows and one has to hope sheds some light on how we arrived in the finale at the end of civilization. Unfortunately it only comes with the DVDs, d'oh. We'll see.

- Falling Skies - If this show is even half-way decent I could see this becoming Chuck for me. With Spielberg's name attached to the project and Noah Wyle (who I've always liked) set to star there's reason to be hopeful. The premise for the show is something along the lines of what would come out if one were to reach into my head and design a series made for me to love. It follows Noah's character in a post-apocalyptic alien invaded world. He's a history teacher who joins up with the human resistance and is determined to put his knowledge of the American's tactics during the Revolution to work against the alien invaders. Just typing that sentence...dayum. Done right this could be very cool according to articles I've read the parallels with the Revolution run deep. Blending History and Scifi together?! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!! Please be good! Or at least have a more bad ass resistance than V...ugh.

Oh yeah and even though I didn't make it to Comic Con for real I still managed to blow some cold hard cash on some epically cool new Caprica merc...observe...

- Beyond Caprica - From one of the writers of the show Beyond Caprica is basically a travel guide to the 12 Colonies that make up the Caprica universe, night life, tourst destinations, etc. Can't wait dive in, such an awesome concept and one I was hoping for based on "The Caprican" site (note potential spoilers at the site).

- Cylon T-Shirt - What virtual con trip would be complete without at least one T-Shirt for the collection? Not sure why just thought this one was cool. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the fact that I first saw it being modeled by Alessandra Torresani herself. Yeah I know it will look better on her but hey it's still cool!

Also want to give a shout out to a few of the blogs that were covering Comic Con where I discovered lots of the above, all three will become regular reads for me.
